Position Summary:
An MMI Industrial & Steel onsite safety manager is responsible for the daily safety overview of the site, this includes the direct management of onsite safety professionals performing activities designed to reduce the risk of accidents in the workplace.
The safety managers’ primary job entails collaborating with supervisors, top management, and employees on the assigned job site to ensure the safety of workers.
The safety managers’ daily activities will commonly involve conducting safety checks and inspections within the workplace to identify unsafe and/or hazardous situations and act or recommend corrective measures to avoid future incidents. These may include safety reporting and documentation procedures, enforcement of primary safety policies, coaching and training, and accident inquiries and investigations, development of root cause documentation, and management of the other safety staff assigned to the site.
Role and Responsibilities:
Through daily interaction with employees and subcontractors, the safety manager shall complete tasks such as:
Ensuring the site is safe for all workers and complies with company or customer safety policies and state and federal safety regulations. Intervene and provide coaching and correction in case of unsafe activities or operations being conducted by employees within the workplace.
Identify potential hazards, implement safety measures, and train workers on safety protocols.
Perform routine inspections of the site, equipment, and materials to ensure they are safe for utilization.
This may involve testing machinery, checking scaffolding, or safely storing hazardous materials.
Responsible for conducting investigations, identifying the causes, and implementing measures to prevent future incidents.
Conduct safety meetings, provide training, and manage any safety concerns or issues workers raise.
Document all safety-related activities and incidents and maintain up-to-date records that can be used for audits or inspections for internal and external reviews.
Assign daily tasks to onsite safety professionals and collaborate closely with the project management team to ensure that all areas requiring safety coverage are scheduled in advance.
Manage and review the work hours of safety staff and keep the inventory of safety equipment up to date while adhering to the established budgetary requirements.
Conduct professional performance reviews for onsite safety professionals while providing additional mentorship and focused training to facilitate their professional growth.
Facilitate any environmental or industrial hygiene related task as required, by company, customer or regulatory standards to include by not be limited to, dust reports, SDS program maintenance, daily exposure limit controls, and heat stress management.
Function as an essential part of any project management and provide any other duties assigned by the MMI Director of Safety.
Note that the activities or functions of a site safety manager shall be based on the nature of activities being conducted as described within the particle scope job as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
Site Safety Coordinators typically require at least 5 to 7 years of site safety experience, or a degree in occupational safety or an equivalent and 2 to 4 years of experience in site safety.
Experience in understanding and implementing safety procedures, regulations, and standards and dealing with OSHA compliance is critical for this role.
Knowledge of dealing with the day-to-day operations of construction sites and understanding the unique safety risks and challenges they present.
Possess an approved certification through an industry recognized and accredited platform such as CSP, CHST, CIT or CHSO.
Current Certification or Qualifications in:
o First Aid and CPR certification with AED endorsement
o Minimum of an OSHA 510 (OSHA 501 Preferred)
o Hazwoper 40-hour
o NFPA 70e Awareness or QEW Level
o Confined Space, Working at Heights, Heavy Equipment Operations, and/or other competency training.
Continuing education is also essential, as safety regulations and standards can change.
Attending safety workshops or seminars and pursuing advanced certifications are crucial for staying updated on safety laws and best practices.
Physical Requirements:
The site safety manager shall at minimum meet the physical requirements of:
· Strength: Lift/carry 50-100 lbs., perform strenuous tasks for 8-12 hours.
· Mobility: Climb ladders/scaffolding to 100+ ft, navigate multiple floors with no elevators, walk/balance on uneven or narrow surfaces, bend/kneel/crawl in confined spaces.
· Dexterity: Precise tool handling, align components, operating machinery.
· Endurance: Stand/walk for long periods, tolerate repetitive motions.
· Environmental Tolerance: Work in extreme weather, wear PPE (harness, helmet), endure noise/dust/vibrations.
· Senses: Adequate vision for blueprints/hazards, hearing for communication/signals.
· Balance: Maintain stability at heights, navigate elevated platforms.
Skills:
Report Structure and Performance Measurements
· The site safety manager shall report daily to the MMI Director of safety, or any other designee as assigned by the MMI Director of Safety.
· Daily reports, observations, coaching and correction documentation, JSA Audits, and other Key Performance Indicators shall be used to ensure quality performance and review by the MMI Director of Safety
Advancement Path
· Safety Professionals can acquire knowledge, experience, and training that will help them develop skills for advancement to positions such as a cooperate safety coordinator or director level assignments. Promotions will be considered based on individual performance and as needed.
