Job Description

IES is looking for an Instrumentation & Electrical Mechanic to join our team! Under the general supervision of the IC&E Team Lead, the I&E Mechanic role involves maintaining and troubleshooting electrical and automation systems as well as installing, testing and commissioning new equipment. Desired competencies include: proven Electrical or Instrumentation skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Ideal candidate must be able to establish priorities under tight deadlines and have a proven track record as a motivated, self-starter who can work on multiple projects and priorities within a fast-paced environment. Incumbent is expected to have sound knowledge of electrical systems and hazards. Prior relevant experience in refinery, manufacturing industries are preferred.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  1. High School diploma or equivalent
  2. Minimum five years of industrial or relevant trade (Electrical or Instrumentation) or fueling and fuel storage facilities experience.

Desired Experience

  • Journeyman Electrical or Contractor License

  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC within sixty days of hire.

Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Instrumentation

Install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot and maintain instrumentation on new or existing plant equipment including:

  • Pressure, temperature, flow, and level transmitters (e.g., Rosemount, Honeywell, Micro Motion)
  • Tank gauging systems (e.g., radar or servo gauges)
  • Gas detection systems, and emergency shutdown (ESD) systems
  • Pneumatic actuated valves, Motor Operated valves (MOV), and solenoids.
  • P&ID diagrams

Electrical Systems

Responsible for new installation as well as performing preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical equipment including:

  • 4kV and 480V switchgear and circuit breakers.
  • 4kV and 480V Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
  • Install/maintain motor starters and overloads
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Lighting panels, transformers, and grounding systems.
  • Cathodic protection systems on pipelines and storage tanks.
  • Isolate and de-energize electrical equipment (up to and including 2.4kV and 480V) in accordance with plant LOTO procedures and safe work practices, including verifying zero energy state and installing protective grounds as applicable.
  • Repair, maintain and adjust system components or remove and replace defective parts.

Control Systems

Ability to understand basic control system architecture and integrated systems such as:

  • PLC systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Triconex, GE RX3i)
  • DeltaV DCS
  • Tank overfill protection and Pipeline leak detection systems
  • Wiring of Marshalling cabinets
  • Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and SCADA interface equipment.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Use diagnostic and test equipment, including:
    • Multifunction calibrators (e.g., Fluke 754)
  • Megohmmeters, loop testers, and multimeters
  • HART communicators and field communicators
  • Perform field and bench testing/repairs, including:
  • Replacing circuit boards, sensors, and wiring harnesses
  • Servicing instrument air systems, tubing, and fittings
  • Cleaning and lubricating mechanical components
  • Consult manufacturers’ manuals, P&IDs, loop diagrams, and control narratives to determine appropriate test procedures and maintenance protocols.
  • Advise and coordinate with process operators and control room personnel during commissioning, shutdowns, and troubleshooting activities.

Calibration & Documentation

  • Calibrate instruments and control loops per manufacturer specifications and internal calibration intervals using traceable standards.
  • Maintain accurate calibration and maintenance records in CMMS (e.g., SAP, Maximo).

Safety & Compliance

  • Conduct and document formal risk assessments, including:
    • Job Safety Analyses (JSA)
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) verifications
  • Electrical arc flash risk assessments (per NFPA 70E)
  • Ensure compliance with company safety and environmental policies, OSHA regulations, NEC codes, and industry best practices (API, ISA, IEEE).
  • Support plant operations during turnarounds, shutdowns, and emergencies, including after-hours callouts and participation in the emergency response team if applicable.
  • Consult with and advise process operators.
  • Adherence to IES Safe Work Practices policy

Training & Development

Participate in and complete structured I&E training programs covering:

  • Electrical safety and control systems
  • Hazardous area classification (e.g., Class I Div 1)
  • NFPA/NEC compliance

OTHER DUTIES

  • Proactively updates and maintains operating standards, emergency procedures and any other documents as needed.
  • Performs a variety of special assignments as needed within the scope of the position.

  • Ability to stand and walk for periods of times on hard and uneven surfaces.

  • Ability to operate and use all equipment safely. Vision and depth perception are required.
  • Ability to bend, carry, push, pull, stoop, squat, twist and kneel in sometimes narrow spaces.
  • Ability to work unaccompanied at a steady work pace for extended shifts of 8-10 hours or more, as assigned.

 

Compensation

Island Energy Services offers a competitive salary that commensurate with qualifications and experience. IES also offers a generous benefits package to include comprehensive health and welfare benefits, vacation, sick leave, 401k plus employer matching, supplemental voluntary insurance options, etc.

This is a negotiated union position, and the starting hourly pay rate is $42.45/hour. The position may progress through on the job training to the position of I&E Mechanic level.
