Target start date: Immediately.
Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.
We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.
We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.
As we scale from research and development to full-scale manufacturing, we are looking for a Embedded Firmware Engineer, Generalist. For this role we are looking for a generalist comfortable in contributing to multiple parts of our embedded stack. You will have the opportunity to contribute to motor control, MCU API development, HIL testing and OTA firmware + bootloader deployment to name a few. Collaborating closely with other hardware- and software-teams, you will play a vital role in everything from initial hardware bring-up to security and safety standards compliance for firmware running on consumer grade devices. The ideal candidate will have a background in developing and deploying firmware for robotics, automotive or consumer products. We are looking for individuals with hands-on experience, and a proactive "get-things-done" attitude, who excel in both long-term strategic planning and day-to-day execution of practical tasks.
What You’ll Get By Joining Our Team
Have the opportunity to set technical direction on embedded software architecture and standards.
Gain experience with cutting edge technology and improve all aspects of your technical skills.
See your work being deployed in a highly disruptive space such as humanoids in the home.
Why this job is exciting
Every day is different! You will get to
Own the interface between hardware and higher level software.
In time, your software will run on thousands of humanoids performing tasks in diverse environments, globally.
You’ll be working with a 50+ DoF biped, with hands, all driven by motors we design and manufacture in-house.
Within one month, you will…
Get acquainted with the company’s firmware stack, tools, and team; start contributing to small tasks.
Get to know our humanoid NEO and where you can add value to its development process.
Within three months, you will…
Take ownership of specific software modules; collaborate on software-hardware integration and testing.
Suggest improvements to development processes and contribute to project planning.
Within one year, you will…
Lead the development of key projects within embedded software development.
See the output of your work operating on robots deployed at increasing scales.
Guide the rest of the team and future hires on developing high quality embedded software.
Responsibilities:
Architecture and firmware development for NEO's motor controllers, sensor interfaces and battery management system.
Develop robust OTA firmware and bootloader deployment solutions.
Support other teams on hardware - software integration projects.
Contribute to CI/CD infrastructure and HIL test beds.
Drive features in the higher level robot software safety layer.
Must-Haves:
5+ years of experience in embedded software development on devices deployed at scale to industrial or consumer settings
Proficiency in embedded C and C++ programming on bare-metal platforms
Strong understanding of common microcontroller architectures and interfaces (eg., ARM Cortex-M, TI C2000 series and SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethercat)
Proficiency in embedded debugging techniques including JTAG and trace tools
Ability to interpret MCU and sensor data sheets, experience in selecting an appropriate device for specific applications
Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and debug complex software and hardware issues
Nice-To-Haves:
Understanding of functional safety standards that apply to embedded systems and firmware operating on consumer grade products
