Job Description

Acton ADU - Now Hiring: Design Coordinator

Location: Hybrid (Work from Home + South Bay Area Meetings).
Type: Full-Time.
Experience Level: Mid-to-Senior.

Industry: Residential Architecture / Construction.

Who are we?

Acton ADU is a mission-driven construction company based in Campbell, California, at the heart of Silicon Valley. With over 35 years of experience and a deep-rooted legacy in residential building, we’ve focused our efforts entirely on one of California’s most pressing challenges - housing. Our specialty is designing, navigating, and building accessory dwelling units (ADUs), also known as backyard homes, to create accessible housing options for families across the Bay Area.

We’re not just building ADUs - we’re reimagining how it’s done with a goal of helping homeowners across California solve their housing needs with a smart, capable, and experience partner. Acton ADU is undergoing a bold transformation, blending our deep industry expertise with the agility and innovation of a Silicon Valley startup.

Our Core Principles:

  • We innovate.
  • We work together.
  • We care about people.

The Role: Design Coordinator.

This unique position bridges our Design and Construction groups and is key to ensuring exceptional client experiences and successful project outcomes.

You, along with the Head of Design, will be one of the first points of contact after a client signs their contract and will serve as the crucial link between our design team, the client, and our construction management group. If you excel at organization, communication, and coordination - and thrive in a culture of continuous improvement - this could be the perfect role for you.

What You’ll Do:

  • Client Onboarding & Support: Guide new clients through design selections and approvals with empathy, professionalism, and consistency.
  • Project Design Coordination: Ensure every design element, finish, and selection is documented accurately and communicated effectively to internal teams.
  • Design Project Oversight: Help manage the design pipeline by tracking schedules, key milestones, and budget allowances. Proactively manage customer change orders, coordinate internal team updates, and maintain clear, timely communication to keep all stakeholders aligned.
  • Project Support: Collaborate with project managers to ensure all materials are purchased correctly, selections are properly tracked, and any changes are approved and signed.
  • Permit Management: Work directly with municipalities to resolve building department comments and ensure timely permit issuance.
  • Construction Documentation: Assist in the production and revision of construction drawings in Revit as needed.
  • Consistency & Quality: Maintain exceptional standards across all projects, using systems that ensure repeatability and quality.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of Revit drafting experience.
  • Minimum 5 years working with a residential architect or builder (both preferred).
  • Strong experience resolving city plan check comments and managing the permit process.
  • Proven ability to track and manage client design and material selections.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • Empathy, diplomacy, and confidence in guiding clients through design decisions.
  • Deep commitment to customer satisfaction - proven by references.
  • Strong proficiency in Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, and preferably Buildertrend. Additionally, familiarity with Bluebeam and Sketchup are a plus.
  • Training in or strong exposure to interior design practice.
  • Ability to work remotely, but must be located close enough to regularly visit clients in the South Bay Area.

What We're Looking For:

  • A solution-oriented, proactive, and self-starting team member.
  • Someone energized by change and motivated by the opportunity to help shape the future of housing in California.
  • A person who doesn’t wait for problems to be solved-they create the solution.
  • Someone who thrives in an environment where systems are always evolving, and excellence is always expected.

Why Acton ADU?

  • Join a visionary, mission-driven company on the cusp of making a massive impact on housing in California.
Be part of a high-growth, forward-thinking team where your ideas matter.
  • Work remotely with flexibility while staying engaged with hands-on, meaningful work.
  • Help us set the bar for what customer service and residential design can look like.

At Acton ADU, you can shape your own future-and ours. The sky is literally the limit.

Sound like you? Let’s talk!

Benefits:

We offer competitive salaries, medical and dental insurance, a generous vacation/sick leave policy, and a matching 401(k) program. But what truly sets us apart is our supportive and innovative culture, where everyone is encouraged to contribute to meaningful change.

Equal Opportunity Employer:

Acton ADU is committed to diversity and inclusion. We provide equal employment opportunities to all qualified individuals regardless of age, race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.

About Acton ADU:

Stan Acton has been a builder since he was 10 years old. It began the day he broke his father’s wooden mallet. The mallet had been crafted by Stan’s father when he was a kid, on his own father’s Shopsmith lathe. Stan was devastated and rushed to grab a piece of firewood. He carefully took the wood, placed it on his father’s Shopsmith--and in that moment, his passion for carpentry was born.Today Acton Construction is a Design-Build company with enthusiasm for crafting beautiful homes that are functional, lasting, and charming. Acton Construction thrives through established processes and utilizing expertise to provide customers with certainty, transparency, and value--always. This is Acton’s legacy.
